Tips to Prevent Air Conditioner Problems

With the summer months comes the summer heat. In some parts of the country, the temperature can go as high as 100 degrees. With the scorching heat, this would be the worst time for your AC unit to malfunction.

Don’t be caught in the summer heat due to malfunctioning air conditioner. Here are a few tips to prevent AC problems.

Routine maintenance

Just like any piece of equipment, your cooling system is also in need of a little TLC. Make it a habit to call a professional once a year to give it a thorough service. Do this before your air conditioner kicks into high gear for the summer. This will prevent the need for AC repair and will help you survive the summer comfortably.

Regular maintenance will help extend the life of your air conditioner and ensure that it is operating at the highest efficiency. Some people skip routine maintenance because they think it’s just a waste of money. But if you run your AC summer after summer without tending to proper maintenance, you’ll be kissing it goodbye sooner rather than later. Remember, the better you take care of your unit, the longer it will last.

Clean outside unit

Look at your exterior unit and make sure it has plenty of space to breathe. Keep the area clean and make sure it is free of tall grass, debris and other items that could block the free flow of air. While you’re at it, you may also want to clean the outdoor unit. Use a garden hose to get rid of dirt, dust, leaves and whatever else is stuck on the side. A build up of dirt and debris can cause the compressor to work harder. This may shorten the life of the outdoor condensing unit and raises your electricity cost as well.

Replace air filters

A dirty or clogged air filter is one of the most common causes of air conditioning problems. Some people may think it’s not a big deal, but it can actually prevent your AC unit from performing its basic function.

Think of it as having something stuck down your throat. Yes, you can still breathe, but you may eventually find yourself gasping for air if you don’t do anything about it. Not changing or cleaning your air filer will put a strain on your AC unit. This will lead to a higher energy bill as your system struggles to take in air. Your AC may also malfunction and ultimately fail.
