Reasons for a Furnace Leaking Water

Reasons for a Furnace Leaking WaterFurnace can leak water. If you notice water pooling around your furnace, make sure that you deal with the problem in the soonest possible time. This may cause water damage on your walls and floors, which can cost you a lot of money if they’re not dealt with immediately. Plus, it can also mean the death of your heating system. The cost of ignoring the problem can be very high.

If your furnace appears to be leaking, check out the list below to help you assess the issue. Please make sure that you call a trained Erie professional to diagnose and solve the problem.

Furnace humidifier leak

A faulty internal humidifier is one of the most common causes of a leaky furnace. The furnace humidifier is connected to your plumbing system to add moisture to the air during the winter months. If your humidifier cracks or clogs, water will be leaking from your plumbing to your furnace.
This would be an unlikely problem if you have your furnace checked annually. But if you have neglected tune up, it is possible that you have an issue with your humidifier. This can potentially damage other parts of your furnace, so make sure that you have the issue diagnosed and remedied as soon as possible.

Clogged internal drain

Some furnaces share an internal drain with the air conditioner. If your air conditioner and furnace share a drain, an internal drain system could be the culprit. This could force water into the furnace; thus, causing water to leak from the furnace.

Condensation leak

High efficiency furnaces pump cool exhaust away from the furnace. With this type of furnace, condensation is a normal process. The condensation is usually channeled into a floor drain. If the floor drain is clogged or there is a break or a clog in the drain line, water may start pooling under your furnace.

Secondary heat exchanger

If you have ruled out all the issues stated above, it is likely that you have a faulty secondary heat exchanger. This can be a costly problem that needs immediate action. If left unaddressed, you may need to replace your current unit with a newer one.
