How Often Should You Replace Your Furnace Filters

Regular maintenance of your HVAC system is important to keep your furnace running as efficiently as possible. Changing your air filter is one of the quickest and most effective ways to maximize the efficiency of your heating system.  A clean air filter ensures proper and efficient operation. Plus, it helps improve indoor air quality.

Different homes require different changing schedules. The frequency at which you should change your air filters depend on a number of factors.  Here are some general guidelines that can help you determine when to change your furnace filters.

Frequency of use

The furnace is used more frequently during the winter months. For that reason, we suggest that you check your filter every month. If it is clogged or dirty, then go ahead and change it. If not, you can wait 3 months to replace it.

Consider the type of filter you have

Some filters are more efficient at filtering air than others. 1-inch filters need to be switched out every month; while 3-inch filters should be replaced every 3 months. Check the product information for the manufacturer’s suggested frequency of change.

Consider your life habits

Does anyone smoke in your home? If so, you may want to change your 1 to 2-inch filters every 2 months. 4-inch filters, on the other hand, should be replaced every 4 months. If there are multiple smokers in your home, be sure to change it sooner. If there are no smokers, 1-inch filters can go 3 months without changing; while 4-inch filters are good for 6 months.

Do you have pets?

If you have multiple fur-shedding pets, you may want to change filters once a month. This is especially important if any member of the family suffers from asthma or allergies. Remember, filters are designed to trap dirt, dust and pet dander. It is your first line of defense against dust and allergens.
