Sounds Your Furnace Shouldn’t Make

Sounds Your Furnace Shouldn’t MakeA furnace can be a noisy thing. Minor pops that emanate from the air ducts and the gentle hum of your furnace are definitely regular sounds. This will tell you that your heating system is working. Most homeowners have grown accustomed to these sounds. But if you hear some louder-than-normal noises coming from your furnace, this could be an indication that there is something wrong with it.

Here are 4 weird sounds your furnace shouldn’t make.

Booming

If you hear a loud booming sound when you turn on your furnace, it can be indicative of an expanding air ducts. Often, this happens because the ductwork isn’t appropriately sized.

In some cases, booming sound may be a sign that the burner assembly is dirty. The dirt keeps the burners from igniting, and the booming noise you hear are basically mini explosions in the furnace. This issue shouldn’t be taken lightly as it can cause the heat exchanger to crack. Contact a professional HVAC technician immediately to diagnose the problem and fix it.

Clicking

This shouldn’t be a cause of concern, until you start hearing loud, constant clicking sounds. This may mean gas issues, faulty pilot or that something is amiss with your wiring. Certain furnace models will click when the pilot light isn’t operating as it should. If the clicking noise has no discernible pattern, you may have a problem with your gas valve. Call your gas provider immediately to fix the problem.

Squealing

Squealing noise can be due to a variety of issues. A malfunctioning blower or motor, a loose blower belt, and a shaft bearing that requires oiling are some of the most common causes. These issues may not be as big of a deal as compared to the others on the list, but make sure to have it checked as soon as possible.

Chirping

Chirping sound coming from your furnace is actually quite common. This is especially true if it hasn’t been used for a while. But if the noise doesn’t go away, it may be due to a misaligned belt or fan. It may be a simple issue, but you don’t want it to turn into a bigger problem.
